Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of subjective age on health of older people living in community. Health of older people are measured on three dimensions: subjective health, depressive symptom and cognitive function. Data from 'A Survey on Healthy Ageing and Age-Friendly Community(2017)' which was a part of ¡¸KSHAP: Korean Social Life, Health and Aging Project¡¹ was used for analyzing 982 elderly over 65. The results showed that subjective age affected the health of older people and that the impact of subjective age varied depending on which aspects of health are analyzed. First, perception of age affected subjective health, which showed that those who perceived their age as younger than their actual age had better subjective health than those who perceived their age the same as their actual age. On the contrary, those who perceived their age as older than their actual age were found to have worse subjective health than those who perceived their age the as the real age. Second, subjective age affected depressive symptom which showed that people who perceived their age as older than their actual age were found to have higher depressive symptom than those who perceived it the same as their actual age. Third, subjective age of the elderly had an effect on cognitive function, which showed that those who perceived their age as younger than their actual age had better cognitive function than those who perceived their age the same as the actual age. Findings from this research have some implications for intervention endeavors in promoting health of older people, and further research on the concept and impact of subjective age as well.
